People who join an exercise program together with friends are far more likely to finish it — and to still be exercising months later — than people who join alone. In a randomized weight-management study, 95% of participants recruited with friends completed the program, against 76% of those who came solo (Wing & Jeffery, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1999).
Exercising alongside a partner measurably extends how long you keep going — the Köhler effect: nobody wants to be the one who stops first. In controlled trials, people held exercises dramatically longer with a partner than alone (Irwin, Scorniaenchi, Kerr, Eisenmann & Feltz, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, 2012).
And commitment stakes — the other half of what we do — held up in a large field experiment: gym-goers who put their own money on the line kept exercising at higher rates long after the incentive ended (Royer, Stehr & Sydnor, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, 2015). Buddies plus stakes is the two of them together.

Does it cost anything to be someone's buddy?
No. Buddies are free and mutual. Money only ever enters the picture through your own commitment, if you choose to make one.
What exactly does my buddy see?
Your handle, your sessions done versus committed this month, and your show-up percentage. Your proof photos stay hidden unless you flip one visible on your wall; never amounts, never your charity. You can remove a buddy at any time and the window closes both ways.
Can people find me without my permission?
No. You're only findable by handle if you switch that on, and every buddy connection needs an explicit yes from both sides.
What if I want to stop?
Remove the buddy from your buddies page. No notification drama — it just quietly ends for both of you.
